It is named for the Russian gravestones discovered in the area at the top of the hill by people digging for gold during the California Gold Rush.  It features an iconic San Francisco landmark and views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Transamerica Pyramid, one of the largest parks in the city, and several hidden gems. The public schools serving students in Russian Hill are part of the San Francisco Unified School District. This is one of the largest school districts in the country. Specific schools that serve students living in Russian Hill include Parker Jean Elementary School, Yick Wo Elementary School, the New School of San Francisco, Cooper Children Center, and Galileo High School.

George Sterling Park

One of the best places to get outside in the city of San Francisco. Play tennis, pickleball, or basketball at the Alice Marble Courts at the top of the park. The courts are an hommage to Alice Marble one of the world's top women's tennis players. She won 18 grand slam championships. They have the best views overlooking the bay and the bridge. 

Climb a Secret Staircase

Being that it is a steep hill, there are many staircases throughout the neighborhood. There are several small parks and greenspaces to enjoy where you can find a secret staircase. Take a walk up a secret staircase at the end of Vallejo Street where it meets Jones Street and arrive in the Vallejo Street Crest Historic District. This hidden gem of the city offers amazing views and a quiet mini-park that overlooks North Beach

Ina Collbrith Park is another hidden gem of Russian Hill. The secret stairway here leads down to Mason Street and then to Taylor Street and then into Chinatown, North Beach, and the San Francisco Little Italy. Look closely and the famous flock of green parrots might make an appearance. 

The Cable Car

The Powell-Hyde Cable Car Line winds through the neighborhood. Take the car to Lombard Street one of San Francisco's most popular tourist spots and take in 360-degree views of the city. Then get back on the cable car and ride it to the end of the line as Russian Hills meets the Wharf. Make sure to pop into the Buena Vista Cafe for an Irish Coffee, it will be a new favorite. 

Francisco Park

Francisco Park is one of the newest parks in San Francisco and one of the largest constructed in nearly 40 years in the city. The completion of the park happened in the spring of 2022. The park is home it an impressive play structure, a dog park, open green space, and more. It is a popular spot for a picnic on the lawn while taking in views that include the bridge, Alcatraz, and the Ghirardelli sign. Locals like to grab something delicious from the nearby Cheese Plus and head to the park. 

Polk Street

If you enjoy a relaxing nightcap with friends or the nightlife scene, Polk Street has one of the highest numbers of bars in the city. Polk Stretches from Russian Hill to Nob Hill. The bars on the Russian Hill side offer a more relaxed vibe. Some favorites include the small nook known as Woods Polk Station, the simple Greens Sports Bar, and the fun private-themed Buccaneer. 

The Original Swensen's Ice Cream

One of the best and most popular ice cream spots in the city. Swensen's was founded in 1948 by Earle Swensen. The shop makes everything in small batches in the shop. They still use original recipes from the beginning. The ice cream is fresh and every ingredient is top-notch. The atmosphere is retro and fun.
