The Sunnyside Neighborhood in San Francisco

One of the notable aspects of Sunnyside is its strong sense of community, where residents take pride in homeownership. Many individuals and families have chosen to make Sunnyside their long-term residence, contributing to the neighborhood's stability and close-knit environment. The homeownership rate is 65% which is twice the average of San Francisco as a whole.

The Sunnyside Neighborhood Association offers regular events such as a Halloween Party and candidates forum.

Of course, the center of the neighborhood is the Sunnyside Conservatory.

Sunnyside boasts an array of amenities that cater to various interests and lifestyles. For those seeking entertainment and socializing opportunities, the neighborhood features numerous bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. Whether residents are looking for a casual outing with friends or a culinary adventure, they can easily find options to suit their tastes.

Nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers will appreciate the presence of several parks in Sunnyside such as the Dorothy Erskine Park and the Sunnyside Playground. These green spaces provide opportunities for leisurely strolls, picnics, and recreational activities, offering residents a chance to connect with nature within their own neighborhood.

Sunnyside Neighborhood Highlights

  1. Parks: There are several great parks in the neighborhood. The north edge of the neighborhood is home to Sunnyside Playground with amazing views, sports courts, and a clubhouse that hosts community clubs and events.
  2. Community: As previously mentioned above, Sunnyside is most recognized by locals for its tight-knit community feel and pride of residents.
  3. Walkable: The Sunnyside neighborhood has a pretty high walk score of 78. There is so much within a short distance from homes. If you need something beyond the neighborhood just hop on public transportation.
  4. Transportation: The Sunnyside neighborhood is small but is home to several easily accessible public transportation lines. The MUNI runs three bus lines 23-Monterey, 36-Teresita, and 43-Masonic. The BART also has two nearby stations in Glen Park and Balboa Park.
  5. Education: The southern edge of the community is City College of San Francisco. Here you can access easy transportation, take seemingly endless classes at the largest community college in the country, just enjoy the atmosphere of the grounds, or check out some entertainment performed by college programs.

Schools Serving San Francisco's Sunnyside Neighborhood

The public schools of Sunnyside are under the San Francisco Unified School District umbrella. This is one of the largest public school districts in the country. Sunnyside is small in land mass and not many schools are within the boundaries of the neighborhood. Sunnyside Elementary is located in the neighborhood. Older students attend Denman Middle School and Balboa High School.

There are some great private schools located in Sunnyside including Saint Finn Barr School a private catholic school. There is a good collection of preschools in the neighborhood as well, the most prominent is Miraloma Cooperative Nursery School.

Popular Things to Do in Sunnyside

Shopping

Most of the shopping in Sunnyside is found along Monterey Boulevard which acts like a Main Street to the neighborhood. Between Ridgewood Avenue and Edna Street, you can find a good collection of local businesses.

Dining

There are surprisingly a lot of eating establishments packed into this small neighborhood. Some of the favorites include grabbing some coffee at Railroad Espresso or grabbing some classic comfort food like a good burger at Big Joe's

Entertainment

Most of the entertainment in the area comes from the community college, the recreation center in the park, and the outdoor spaces. But you do not have to travel far to benefit from neighboring areas that are more bustling. Just five miles outside of the neighborhood boundaries and you are in the bustling city center.

Sunnyside Real Estate

There is a fun mix of homes in Sunnyside. The area has some spread-out Victorian stunners and has filled in the spaces between them with nicely sized mid-century modern homes. The "newer" mid-century homes offer an average of 4 to five bedrooms which is ample room for a bustling city and hard to find in newer construction homes unless they are on the outskirts of town or in the suburbs.
